S.T.E.A.M. Showcase 2022

April 01, 2022
By Fremont Christian School

On Friday, March 18, elementary parents were invited to our annual S.T.E.A.M. Showcase, which was facilitated virtually this year, with teachers providing classroom tours and their S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) projects via the web. Each grade level learned about the engineering design process, which includes the following steps: ask, imagine, plan, create, test, and improve. Using the curriculum from Engineering is Elementary, a curriculum developed by the Museum of Science in Boston, students solved real-world problems connected to stories of students around the world.

Transitional Kindergarten

Our transitional kindergartners designed a house for various environments, utilizing the names and characteristics of shapes they had learned together in class. They first planned their house using a variety of materials such as blocks, rubber bands, Unifix Cubes, and Legos, then created structures for the environment of their choice, such as the beach or mountains.

Kindergarten

The concept of habits was the focus for our kindergartners, whose engineering project included creating animals with UV-light-sensitive beads, then creating habitats for their critters. If not, their animal was in a safe environment!

Grade 1

First Grade STEAM Project

The unit begins with the storybook Mariana Becomes a Butterfly, Over the course of the unit, students learned about agricultural pest management, the life cycles of plants, and the interdependence of insect pollinators and plants. Like Mariana, students then followed the steps of the engineering design process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their own hand pollinators.

Grade 2

The unit begins with the storybook Lerato Cooks Up a Plan, Students explore the life cycles and environmental impact of products,

Grade 3

Third-grade STEAM project

In third grade, students explored magnetism and its applications in engineering. The unit begins with the storybook Hikaru’s Toy Troubles, Over the course of the unit, students analyze the design of transportation systems, investigate the properties of magnets, and build model toys that use magnets.

Grade 4

Fourth graders explored electricity and its use in everyday technologies. The unit begins with the storybook A Reminder for Emily, Over the course of the unit, students explore energy and electricity, investigate closed and open circuits, and create diagrams of circuits.

Grade 5

The unit begins with the storybook Juan Daniel’s Fútbol Frog, 萨尔瓦多的一个男孩用生物工程学为他的fútbol足球队的吉祥物设计了一个安全的环境, a small frog. Over the course of the unit, students explored the concepts of biomimicry, conservation, and biotechnology, and tested how quickly or slowly water passes through different materials.

FCS Fine Arts: Choirs & Musicale 2018

March 19, 2018
By Admissions Office

Musicale in Southern California. Joining with other high school choirs from California,

From the official ACSI website:

"ACSI Musicale 是一个为期两天的唱诗班节日,在所有唱诗班联合的公共指挥表演和神圣音乐会中达到高潮. Each choir, regardless of size, must memorize the six (6) combined songs chosen by the guest conductor. Each choir will also be adjudicated by the guest conductor on two (2) of their own selections. Musicale also features adjudications for chamber choirs, large ensembles, small ensembles, sacred classical solos, and gospel solos.

This is not a competition. Choirs, ensembles, and soloists are adjudicated by the guest conductor or guest adjudicators, and received oral and written evaluative comments."

This year, both our Concert Choir and Living Water Ensemble each earned a Command Performance. A couple of our students also earned solo Command Performance — congratulations to Keren G. and Madison G.! One student noted that judges were brought to tears due to an excellent performance from FCS.

A big congratulations to Mr. Guzman, Ms. Sondra, and every student. We've seen the hard work that each person puts in to make this run smoothly.

Campus Garden, Part III: J-Term

December 11, 2017
By Admissions Office

Original writeup provided by Terry Gregory, edited and published by Emily Bean. This is the third part in our series featuring the campus garden at Fremont Christian School.

January Term, or J-Term, is a specialized two-week session between the first and second semesters of high school.

From Mr. Gregory:

Part of the garden design concept involved my J-term class.

It is called "Bringing Back the Natives." A healthy garden needs a lot of natural pollinators (bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds),

My J-Term students helped to design the new areas and installed the drip irrigation system in January 2015. In both January 2016 and 2017, we continued to plant natives at the Y-Building and at the end of the second-grade portable classrooms. I am happy to report that the pollinators have faithfully returned to our school garden site, as we saw many of them this fall.

My next J-Term class (2018) will continue this project, 但我们也开始关注使用温室来播种和种植我们自己的本地植物和蔬菜,希望有一天我们能自给自足,在校园里提供我们自己的迷你苗圃, rather than purchase our plants from garden centers.

J-Term will begin once we're back from Christmas break!

Campus Garden, Part II: Course Integration

November 20, 2017
By Admissions Office

Original write up provided by Terry Gregory, edited and published by Emily Bean. This is the second part of a series featuring the campus garden at Fremont Christian School.

Once the garden beds were completed and the automatic irrigation was installed and running, it was time for the students to participate in April 2015. The grade 5 class was first involved with some basic pilot projects, such as planting and harvesting potatoes. Students were allowed to take home the food and share with their families. These students got exposure to nutrition-based activities in both the garden and their classrooms.

Summer program students had opportunities to plant seeds, raise starter plants, and upkeep a variety of vegetables. These students also began a garden journal.

A grade 7 Garden Science class was added in to the junior high 2017-2018 elective wheel. Students have been engaged and very receptive to the hands-on learning opportunities in the vegetable garden. Garden Science students will continue into the fall and winter with projects on native plants. It’s been a blessing to see our children enjoy, learn, and care for a part of God’s natural order. We’re also excited to see where we can go with this garden as part of teaching methods.

Campus Garden, Part I: The Beginnings

November 07, 2017
By Admissions Office

Original write-up provided by Terry Gregory, edited and published by Emily Bean. This is the first part of a series featuring the campus garden at Fremont Christian School.

The idea for the campus garden originally came from one of our preschool parents in September 2014. They mentioned their idea to the Head of School, Dr. Tricia Meyer. From there, a small garden committee was built, and one of the leaders is Mr. Gregory. He was highly involved with the garden planning,

There weren’t any plots of land readily available within the current space. The Facilities Department assisted with the plotting and pinpointed an area where land could be used. They devised a three-phase plan in reclaiming land around the Y-Building,

Several people outside of the school were used in this planning phase of the garden. A landscape architect agreed that raised bed planters would be a good way to go, in both design and practical use. Another consultant was suggested to FCS, who has extensive experience with planter box construction. This consulted was part of the team for building the garden. As Mr. Gregory wrapped up with each consultant and departments, the complete garden budget was created and the garden construction began! They worked to build on weekends throughout fall and winter 2014.

Solar Eclipse Viewing 2017

August 17, 2017
By Dr. Handran
Solar Eclipse Viewing: Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 at FCS

Weather permitting, we will have a school-wide solar eclipse viewing on the softball field Monday morning, August 21. Elementary students (grades 2-5) will view the first part of the eclipse.

You must be a fingerprinted and registered volunteer with FCS for the 2017-18 school year.

Numerous FCS and Harbor Light administrative staff will be present on the field to help oversee the event. For safety reasons, we are exclusively using indirect observation methods.

Elementary and junior high students will make pinhole projectors to observe the eclipse. Additional projectors will be provided for use by secondary students. There will also be a telescope viewing station by Dr. Handran. The telescope station also uses an indirect viewing method.

IMPORTANT: NEVER VIEW THE SUN DIRECTLY AS THIS CAN RESULT IN PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE.

Younger students will need more frequent reminders than older students. We are looking forward to a safe, fun, and memorable eclipse experience for everyone!

FCS Preschool & TreeRing Plant 177 Trees

October 22, 2014
By Admissions Office

Preschool parents:

Thank you for your support of the preschool yearbook!

Our yearbook vendor, TreeRing, has partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every yearbook purchase.

A little more about TreeRing:

TreeRing’s environmental roots go deeper than our name. We kinda like this planet, so we’ve partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every yearbook purchased. In addition, we print on recycled paper and only produce the exact number of books parents buy, eliminating unnecessary waste and resources.

It’s the least we can all do for the next generation.

We purchased 177 yearbooks this year, so 177 trees will be planted. Thanks to you, we are planting seeds toward a better future for our children.
